The Finnish Food Workers' Union's (SEL) recent decision to stage two-day strikes targeting the food, meat, and dairy industries has led to significant food wastage, a concern expressed by Anne Somer, Director of Work and Competence at the Federation of Finnish Food Industries.

These strikes have severely disrupted operations in the food industry, resulting in the spoilage and subsequent disposal of essential raw materials needed for food production.

This situation has inadvertently increased food waste, as large quantities of food are being transported to waste facilities.

Somer views the actions of the trade union movement as a direct contradiction to the food industry's commitment to sustainability and ecological responsibility. "The food industry has made significant strides in promoting sustainable development and placing responsibility at the core of its operations. It's ironic that while we combat environmental and climate impacts, the traditional trade union movement shows little regard for responsibility, forcing employers to discard good Finnish food," she laments.

She emphasizes that Finland's economy and competitiveness require government intervention. Somer warns that irresponsible labor actions by the union movement could plunge the country's economy into greater distress.

"We call for responsible and constructive action from the union movement, one that does not harm the environment or society. It's important to remember that participating in strikes is voluntary. No worker is obligated to partake in such irresponsibility," Somer stresses.

This situation highlights the complex interplay between labor actions, industry responsibility, and environmental impact, bringing to light the need for balanced and sustainable approaches in resolving industrial disputes.
