Potato prices in Finland have nearly doubled in comparison to 2012, the S Group, K-Group and Lidl report. “On an average, our potato prices are 90 per cent higher than one year ago,” Ilkka Alarotu, the director of assortments and pricing at S Group, reveals. According to Antti Lavonen, an ombudsman for crop farming at the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), the sharp increase in prices has been induced by last summer's adverse conditions. “Spring was late and rainfall in the summer was mainly low. The fields in Ostrobothnia flooded in the summer and again in early October,” he explains.
