President Alexander Stubb compared Russia’s territorial demands in Ukraine to a hypothetical US land loss during an appearance on Fox News, drawing attention to what he described as the scale of President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions.
Speaking via video link on the Fox programme One Nation with Brian Kilmeade, Stubb addressed a US audience of over 1.5 million viewers. He used a map of the United States to help illustrate what he sees as the real implications of Russia’s demands in Ukraine.
To explain the situation, Stubb drew a parallel.
“If you apply what Putin is asking from Ukraine to the United States,” he said, “it would be like the US giving up Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and even Maryland, creating a kind of superhighway toward an assault on New York.”
He said this comparison was necessary for American viewers to grasp the full extent of Russia’s goals.
“These are complete demands that are simply a no-go,” Stubb added. “Putin knows that.”
The interview began with a clip of Donald Trump requesting Stubb’s views during meetings in Washington that involved Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. Host Brian Kilmeade introduced Stubb as someone with first-hand experience of Russian policy.
When asked what Putin might have thought of those high-profile meetings, Stubb replied, “He probably watched with disbelief because his main objective is to divide the West.”
The interview focused on Putin’s recent set of demands, which include full control over the Donbas region and the exclusion of Western troops from Ukraine.
Stubb described these as part of a well-established pattern.
“This is typical Russian negotiation strategy,” he said. “They start with one claim, retreat from it, and then change the demands again.”
He stated that rejecting Western security guarantees is now a priority for the Kremlin, precisely because those guarantees have become increasingly important in Europe.
Filming from Finland, Stubb appeared in front of Finnish and NATO flags. He referred to Russia’s long campaign in the Donbas region, noting that Putin has only managed to capture territory gradually.
The Fox News interview marks a rare occasion where a European head of state has broken down Russia’s military demands for a conservative US television audience. The programme, which airs weekly, is popular among supporters of the Republican Party and has frequently featured Trump-aligned commentary.
