Today is International Women’s Day, the theme of which this year is Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty. As in other countries, in Finland
there will be many events nationwide to mark the occasion, and to highlight the severe difficulties still facing women in many parts of the world.
Although the United States has celebrated Women’s Day since 1909, the event has been celebrated internationally on 8 March since 1975. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming in 1977 proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States.
