Travellers entering the United Kingdom with a European passport must now obtain a separate travel authorisation under new rules introduced on Wednesday.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required for entry and must be linked to the traveller's passport. Applications can be submitted online or via a mobile app.

According to UK authorities, the permit is usually issued within three working days. In some cases, it may be approved immediately. Delays are also possible depending on the circumstances of the application.

The ETA is valid for two years. If the passport used to apply is replaced during that time, the authorisation must be renewed. The permit is digitally linked to the passport and does not need to be printed.

The system allows multiple short-term visits to the UK for tourism, study, work, or other approved reasons. Each stay is limited to a maximum of six months. Full terms are detailed on the UK government’s official site.

The current cost of the authorisation is approximately €12, depending on exchange rates.

The ETA scheme is similar to systems already in place in other countries, including the United States, which requires foreign nationals to apply for its ESTA before travel.
