Five apples a day keep mental health decline at bay.Medical News Today reported in late September on a recent study indicating that people who consume a minimum of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day feel mentally healthier than people who consume less fruit and vegetables.

Researchers at the University of Warwick collected information on the physical and mental wellbeing, health-related behaviours and socio-economic background of nearly 14,000 participants over 16-years-old.

The study found that 35.5 per cent of participants with high mental wellbeing consumed a minimum of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, whereas only 6.8 per cent of them consumed no more than one portion a day. Overall, the share of participants with high mental wellbeing declined in parallel with fruit and vegetable intake.

For the purposes of the study, wellbeing was defined not only as the condition of feeling good and functioning but also as optimism, happiness and self-esteem.

The findings, the researchers estimate, are an indication that a high intake of fruit and vegetables may be a factor contributing toward the mental wellbeing of people.
