Electric vehicle users in Finland are being urged to plan their Easter journeys with care as travel volumes surge. Fortum Charge & Drive has released ten recommendations aimed at helping drivers avoid queues at charging stations during peak holiday traffic.

The advice comes amid growing demand for charging infrastructure, particularly during seasonal travel peaks such as Easter.

Traffic is expected to be heaviest on Maundy Thursday, 17 April, and Easter Monday, 21 April.

The following tips focus on efficiency, preparation, and smart driving habits.

1. Plan the journey in advance.
Recent holiday traffic in Sweden led to major delays, including an incident in Sälen where 150 electric vehicles queued for 20 charging points. Drivers are advised to prepare their charging stops ahead of time, especially when travelling to popular holiday destinations.

2. Avoid peak hours.
Charging stations are typically busiest in the afternoon and early evening. Peak times are often Fridays and Sundays between 15:00 and 18:00. Early morning or late evening charging is likely to be quicker.

3. Choose accommodation with charging facilities.
Overnight stays with on-site or nearby charging allow drivers to start return journeys with a full battery, reducing the need to stop immediately for charging.

4. Have a backup plan.
Alternative routes and charging points can be checked via the Fortum Charge & Drive app. The Route Planner function also displays charging station availability in real time.

5. Pack lightly.
Excess weight increases consumption and reduces range. Keeping the load to a minimum limits the number of charging stops required.

6. Drive smoothly.
A calm driving style helps conserve energy. Features such as EcoMode and proper tyre pressure improve range by reducing rolling resistance and energy consumption.

7. Charge to 80 percent.
Charging from 80 to 100 percent is slower and causes more battery wear. Drivers are encouraged to stop at 80 percent, especially on longer journeys.

8. Use high-speed chargers.
The app helps identify stations with faster chargers. Although high-speed options can cost more, they reduce overall travel time. Checking station availability in advance can also prevent unnecessary waiting.

9. Use a charging key or card.
The Fortum Charge & Drive RFID card allows fast activation of charging points. Drivers without a card can order one via the app.

10. Charge before returning home.
Where possible, top up the battery before starting the return leg. In locations without fast chargers, overnight charging with personal cables may be required. A full battery at departure reduces pressure during return traffic.

Easter traffic remains one of the busiest periods for Finland’s road network. EV drivers are advised to act on the recommendations now to avoid disruptions and delays during their holiday travel.
