‘Let’s agree to work for the coming fortnight by supporting our own side in a positive spirit, without negative attacks on the other side’. So the National Coalition Party’s Sauli Niinistö wrote on Facebook to his opponent in the final round of the presidential campaign, the Greens’ Pekka Haavisto.
A welcome, but surprising feature of the presidential elections so far has been the near-absence of negative campaigning. There may be several reasons for this, one being that the stakes in Finland are not as high as in other countries, such as France or especially the United States, where the office of President brings a great deal of political power, and correspondingly greater incentive to land the job by fair means or foul.
