A citizens' initiative to abolish Finland's mandatory military service will launch online and in call-ups on the first Monday of September, voluntary organisation Avoin ministeriö reveals. According to the sponsors of the initiative, conscription is an expensive, unequal and antiquated method of organising national defence. The initiative does not, however, forward any specific legislative revisions, but simply calls for the launch of preparatory work on a bill to abolish the mandatory service. The initiative will be presented to the Parliament for consideration if a minimum of 50,000 Finnish citizens voice their support for it by early March 2014.
