In addition to a country to plough through the economic turbulence, Finland was portrayed as a roughneck demanding uniform rules in the global media last year, the media reviews compiled by Finnish delegations suggest. Especially in crisis-ravaged countries, the tone of the media was frosty: Finland was said to be selfish and lack solidarity. The Italian media depicted Finland as the icon of a group of countries labelled as the “hawks of the north”. On the other hand, Finland's views were appreciated in countries with high credit ratings. The media's portrayal of Finland, however, was particularly negative in Russia, where the media disseminated unfounded claims about Finnish child welfare practices.
