According to Finnwatch, private label products of Finnish food store chains are produced in conditions, where human rights are violated grievously. An investigation by the civic organisation exposed problems particularly at the Natural Fruit Factory in Thailand, where working conditions imply forced labour and human trafficking. The pineapple juice concentration produced at the plant is used in Pirkka, Rainbow and Eldorado juices. “Factory employees get illegally low wages and have to work overtime for up to 5—10 hours a day. The management has confiscated the passports and work permits of migrant workers,” reveals Sonja Vartiala, the executive director at Finnwatch. S Group, Kesko and Tuko all comply with international responsibility principles in procurements. Finnwatch, however, believes the production chain should be supervised more intensively. S Group and Kesko have asserted that measures to rectify the issues detected by Finnwatch will be adopted.
