Law enforcement officers have released one of two men taken into custody in connection with an ongoing rape investigation in Kempele, Northern Ostrobothnia.
“We were able to ascertain based on the interrogations that one of the men in custody had nothing to do with the incident and was not in the company of the injured party on the day of the incident. He was released this afternoon,” a police spokesperson said in a statement released by the Oulu Police Department on Wednesday.
None of the people interviewed as part of the pre-trial investigation witnessed the incident first hand. The 17-year-old man who remains in police custody has denied his alleged role in the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Kempele on the evening of 23 November.
The public has engaged in a lively, largely disproportionate discussion about the incident on social media, according to police officers. “Police hope that people stay patient and conduct themselves appropriately in the conversation surrounding the case, and remind that you cannot write whatever you please even on social media,” the statement reads.
