The Moomins are marking their 80th anniversary with exhibitions in New York and Tampere, spotlighting the life and work of Finnish creator Tove Jansson.
“Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Is Always Open” is now open at the Brooklyn Public Library, where it will remain until the end of September. It is the first major exhibition in the United States dedicated to Jansson and her Moomin characters.
The exhibition includes texts, books, archival items and a range of public events such as readings, film screenings and discussions. It also connects the American audience to the world’s only Moomin Museum, located in Tampere, Finland.
The project is a collaboration between Moomin Characters, the City of Tampere, Finnair and Arabia. Iina Ojala, Tampere’s marketing director, said in a press release that the international effort promotes the museum and city globally.
A parallel exhibition is also running at the Moomin Museum in Tampere Hall until the end of August. It focuses on the original Moomin House model and the three-year process behind its construction.
In December, New York will host another major Finnish cultural event when the Metropolitan Museum opens its first exhibition on artist Helene Schjerfbeck.
