Helsinki's Autotalo block, located in the bustling Kamppi district, is set for a significant expansion following an architectural design contest. The winning entry, named "Cabriolet," was submitted by ARCO Architecture Company and stood out among diverse proposals from top design firms.

The competition aimed to enhance the functionality, efficiency, and vitality of the entire block.

The proposed design will transform the current parking and street space into new office and retail areas while also revitalizing the existing block infrastructure. The jury unanimously chose "Cabriolet" for its thoughtful integration with the urban landscape and its potential for enriching the block’s architectural fabric.

"Cabriolet" was praised for adhering closely to the competition’s criteria, which emphasized urban design quality, feasibility, and developmental potential. Its adaptability to the environment was considered more crucial than the functionality of individual details. This choice was informed by feedback from Helsinki residents, collected through the city’s “Kerrokantasi” online platform.

The next steps involve refining the winning proposal in preparation for zoning amendments. This will include further development of both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the plan.

The competition, which began in December 2023, was a collaboration between LähiTapiola Real Estate Asset Management and the City of Helsinki, inviting only leading architectural firms to participate. Among the contenders were ARCO Architecture Company, Architect Office Opus, JKMM Architects, and PES Architects.
