Technology company Exel Composites has reported a confirmed cyberattack targeting its internal systems, with a risk of leaked personal and business information. According to a company statement, the breach involved a limited number of workstations and servers. The intrusion was identified and confirmed on 18 July.
Exel Composites, which operates facilities in Joensuu and Mäntyharju, said the compromised data could include personal information belonging to staff and shareholders, along with certain business-related material. The company has notified both the police and data protection authorities.
Chief Executive Paul Sohlberg apologised for the breach and its consequences.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation into the scope of the incident,” he said.
The company has stated that the attack has not disrupted operations or affected its ability to conduct business.
Exel Composites specialises in composite material technologies and supplies customers across the transport, energy, defence and infrastructure sectors.
No details have been shared about the method or origin of the cyberattack. The company declined to say whether a ransom demand was made or if any external parties have claimed responsibility.
Finnish data protection authorities confirmed receipt of the notification but declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
Exel said it has taken steps to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure and is working with external experts to assess the breach and prevent further incidents.
The company has also begun informing potentially affected individuals and shareholders whose data might have been accessed.
