Finnish space and defence technology firm ICEYE will invest over €250 million in new product development, backed by a €41.1 million grant and loan from Business Finland. The funding, one of the agency’s largest ever for a single company, will accelerate ICEYE’s R&D work and strengthen Finland’s standing in European aerospace innovation.
The investment programme focuses on expanding ICEYE’s sensor technologies, with development branching into high-resolution optical imaging and ground-based radio signal detection.
ICEYE will also extend its sensor network beyond satellites, incorporating stratospheric unmanned aerial systems.
ICEYE will finance the programme primarily through its own capital and operational revenue. Business Finland’s contribution includes a €5.7 million research and development grant and a €35.4 million product development loan.
Lassi Noponen, Director General of Business Finland, said the project boosts Finland’s capacity for high-technology growth. “This is a major investment in Finland’s future and European innovation leadership in a rapidly growing sector,” Noponen said. He noted the expected spillover effects across Finland’s wider space and defence ecosystems.
The programme is set to support ICEYE’s global growth by enhancing capabilities in space-based technologies that are in increasing demand. The expansion is expected to create hundreds of new high-skilled jobs in Finland and scale up ICEYE’s operations nationally.
Pekka Laurila, ICEYE co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, said Business Finland’s support will help the company remain a global leader in its field. “This funding allows us to respond to growing international demand and to deliver Finnish innovation at the forefront of the industry,” Laurila said.
The programme also carries broader strategic value for Europe. ICEYE, already a trusted partner for national security and defence applications, has the capacity to deliver intelligence and monitoring systems to European governments. The company’s independent position gives it the ability to support partner countries with resilient and sovereign technologies.
Business Finland’s support for ICEYE builds on earlier efforts to strengthen Finland’s space industry. From 2018 to 2022, the New Space Economy programme provided a foundation for ongoing growth. Business Finland sees this investment as the next step in developing one of the world’s most advanced space and defence ecosystems.
