
Newly elected President François Hollande graces the front pages of several French newspapers on 7 May, a day after the official results of the election’s second round were announced. In a humiliating defeat for incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy, Hollande was elected France’s first socialist president in two decades, shaking up European politics.
In one of the most publicised criminal cases in recent Finnish history, Anneli Auer was first convicted of murdering her husband, but later acquitted on appeal. Citing new evidence, prosecutors have successfully argued for the case to be reexamined by the Supreme Court. Auer’s drawing of a tattoo in a letter to her children, shown in this picture from 8 May, is included in the case material.

The sky above Kustaanmiekka in Helsinki’s Suomenlinna is dotted with colourful kites on Mother’s Day, 13 May. The Kite Society of Helsinki organised Finland’s largest kiting event, which featured animal-themed kites from different parts of the world.
