Concerns precede family murders

Family murders are preceded by concerns of family members and relatives, a special task force suggest. Families have contacted officials and relatives have expressed their concern over the family's situation prior to the offence. In general, the offender is not intoxicated at the time of the crime. In addition, the offender usually has no record of violence. The task force aim to collect data on how to prevent family murders and are to announce their findings after the summer. Since 2003, eight family murders and 27 other child homicides have occurred in Finland. The total number of victims is 57.

Survey: many Finns unhappy with their neighbours

According to a survey commissioned by the housing company Älvsbytalo, many Finns are unhappy with their neighbours. Results indicate that every tenth 15–44-year-old Finn would ditch their neighbours. Nearly half of the respondents aged 30 and under know nothing of their neighbours. Many, however, indicated they would welcome the opportunity to meet their neighbours. In general, residents of detached houses make friends with their neighbours more often than people living in flats. 1,600 Finns responded to the questionnaire.

Low expectations for economy

The Finnish industries' expectations on economic development remain low. The situation in all main business branches is portrayed as dim by the economic survey conducted by the Confederation of Finnish Industries in April. In comparison to a survey conducted in January, prospects have improved slightly; the projections for the economic situation are nevertheless expected ebb. According to Director General, Mikko Pukkinen, the plunge in trade balance and current account is chronic, and an upswing is not to be expected. Nearly thousand companies, which employ some 260,000 people in Finland, responded to the April survey.

Survey: Community pressure may increase students' alcohol usage

A portion of university students feel they drink more alcohol than they would like to due to social pressure, indicates a survey by Nyyti, an organisation promoting the well-being of students. Respondents were concerned that refusing alcohol may have social consequences. Generous alcohol usage may also hinder creating social relationships and diverge students. Third of the respondents signalled that the use of alcohol in student events is excessive, while every other signalled their interest in alcohol-free events. 3,000 first-year students responded to the online survey

Finland discover goalscoring touch against Switzerland

Having scraped two 1–0 wins over Belarus and Slovakia, Finland is back on track with a 5–2 rout over Switzerland. In a game characterised by penalties, Finland managed two long-awaited power-play goals, scored by Jarkko Immonen and Valtteri Filppula. According to YLE, a third-period save by Finland goaltender Kari Lehtonen to deny Switzerland's equaliser proved decisive and restored Finland's momentum – Filppula then putting the game to bed with two final-period goals.
