In the finish, National Coalition Party candidate had a comfortable win over the Greens’ Pekka Haavisto to become the twelfth President of the Republic of Finland.

Niinistö received 62.6 per cent of the vote, about 1.8 million votes. Haavisto received 1.1 million. Voter turnout was low, 68.9 per cent.

Niinistö was the clear favourite throughout the country, with Åland being the only region out of Finland’s more than 330 municipalities where Haavisto won the vote.
