Minister considers the number of carers

Maria Guzenina-Richardson, Minister of Health and Social Services, is considering proposals for the law on elderly care.“MINISTER Maria Guzenina-Richardson (SDP) is considering whether local authorities can be made to increase the number of carers without introducing coercive measures. She does not yet know whether she wants to include binding staff numbers in the law on elderly care.

Before Christmas she was energetically advocating mandatory staff levels, in particular in care institutions where elderly residents are unable to cope on their own. She was taken aback by terrible reports of negligence in care homes.

Box rental prices at Hockey World Cup: 60,000 euros for 40 square metres

Owners of boxes at Helsinki’s Hartwall Areena are set to make a handsome profit during the ongoing Ice Hockey World Championship.“THE Hockey World Cup is driving up the prices for boxes at Helsinki’s Hartwall Areena. Box owners and agencies interviewed by Kauppalehti all speak of very high rents.

The price for the use of a box for the whole period of the tournament (4 May to 20 May), just over two weeks, has reached a peak of around 60,000 euros. Demand is so great that box owners can make a tidy profit from their 40 square metres over a short period.

A greater number of Finns are employing professional handymen.“THE USE of domestic services is growing all the time. Increasing numbers of people buy free time by employing a cleaner to do their weekly cleaning, or by contracting catering services for parties.

Almost 15 per cent of Finnish households regularly take on outside help for domestic tasks. The largest consumer group of domestic services consists of working families with children, who wish to ease the daily burden of cleaning and tidying up. People who live alone are also purchasing domestic services more than ever.

Using plants in medicines could become easier

“The use of natural plants and microbes in medicines may continue to increase. This will happen if Medicines Agency officials approve the broader use of natural compounds in medicines. Active ingredients are generally found in plants in the form of compounds. Researchers try to isolate substances from the compound, in other words to separate one active ingredient.

Rising threats of violence against train conductors: bottles to the head…

Finnish State Railways shop steward Jarkko Karlsson says that in most cases passengers lose their cool when asked to present a ticket, or when a conductor intervenes if drinking aboard a train.“HUNDREDS of cases of threats to conductors or passengers were registered on Helsinki local trains last year. According Finnish State Railways shop steward Jarkko Karlsson the least serious of these cases were threats, at worst the passenger became violent. A good 200,000 passengers travel on local trains every day.
