Talking sense on traffic

A recent article in Helsingin Sanomat (“Amerikkalaistutkija panisi Helsingin liikenteen uusiksi”) noted the recommendations of a visiting American traffic researcher regarding Helsinki’s road traffic. The comments were critical. Likewise, the reaction of Helsinki’s traffic planning representative was, as expected, negative. In other words, Helsinki’s traffic management is content with the situation as it is. This confirms the widely held view that the aim is to deliberately create traffic problems in order to discourage motorists from driving in the city.

All not rosy in Finnish schools

I read with interest two articles in recent editions of Helsinki Times (‘Not built in a day’ on 19 January; ‘Triumphant returns’ on 2 February) about the Finnish educational system. Both articles were extremely positive about the merits of Finnish education and both lauded the Finnish education system for scoring high in the PISA results.

Another view of the Aegean

The suggested mission of Finnish military experts to Greece (“No Fear of the Border”, by MP Annika Lapintie, on 12 January) would really be welcomed by its political leadership and the Greek people if it could help lower the high cost of defending their national borders.

Guggenheim a bad deal for Finnish tourism

We hear from the proponents of the Guggenheim project that the building and the opening of this museum will boost tourism in Finland. The likelihood of the Guggenheim affecting tourism is questionable at best and in my opinion would have no effect on tourists coming here.

Finland’s travel office in New York has no money for promoting tourism to Americans (a major market) travelling here and it has been that way for some time. There are over 300 million people living there who know very little about Finland and the treasures that exist here.

Helsinki doesn’t believe in Helsinki

The year has started with two pieces of apparently very good news. Helsinki is bringing forward, albeit in different ways, two ambitious public projects: the Guggenheim Museum and the Central Library. These are two big and rare opportunities to create new gathering places, social and cultural magnets and, also, new faces of Helsinki to both its citizens and the world.

Brain aerobics: Let’s play bridge!

Finally, good news! Brain cells develop at all ages. What is crucial is to have a good workout, like with any other muscle. In last week’s article, “Brains become leaner with age, but not weaker” (HT 42, 20 October), a number of activities were listed that help train our brains: sudoku, crosswords, physical exercise, puzzles, even singing. But there is another activity that is famous for keeping your brains active and improving the quality of your old age: playing cards or, to be more precise, bridge. Bridge is not like any other game. Its very special status is due to at least three factors.
