Researchers at the University of Helsinki have identified five patterns of brain activity among people diagnosed with depression, finding that patients with the same diagnosis showed differences in communication between brain regions.

The study involved 263 people with depression and 75 healthy participants. Researchers divided patients into five groups based on the strength and frequency of functional connections between different parts of the brain.

Finland has joined France’s European nuclear deterrence initiative, expanding defence cooperation with Paris while ruling out the stationing of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory in peacetime.

President Alexander Stubb said on Monday that the initiative was intended to strengthen European security, increase Europe’s responsibility for its own defence and reduce the risk of escalation.

Foreign Trade and Development Minister Ville Tavio has rejected trade restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements, putting him at odds with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen days after Finland joined an international statement supporting such measures.

Tavio told Helsingin Sanomat that Finland is not preparing national restrictions on imports from Israeli settlements and that he would not support an EU proposal introducing such measures.

Income growth among young adults in Finland has fallen behind older generations, with people under 35 still earning less in real terms than before the 2008 financial crisis, according to a purchasing power review published by STTK on Tuesday.

The Finnish Confederation of Professionals said its long-term figures show a widening gap between age groups. While real incomes have risen across all generations since 1966, older workers have received a larger share of that growth.

Sweden’s parliamentary election remained on a knife edge late on Sunday, with the opposition holding a projected one-seat majority over Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s governing bloc. SVT forecast 175 seats for the opposition and 174 for the right, the minimum margin needed for control of the 349-seat Riksdag.

With most districts counted, the two blocs were separated by only a fraction of a percentage point.

Saudi Arabia has shut a major oil pipeline after drone attacks originating in Iraq as Houthi forces seized Yemen’s Red Sea coast, putting two routes used for Gulf energy exports under pressure. The fighting has displaced about 46,000 people in Yemen and pushed oil above $100 a barrel.

The Saudi Energy Ministry said the East-West pipeline was stopped as a precaution after several drones struck sites in the Riyadh and Medina regions. Saudi authorities reported injuries and damage.

Helsinki stocks recorded their largest one-day decline of 2026 on Monday, with Nokia losing more than 10 per cent as a global technology sell-off spread to Finland.

The Helsinki Stock Exchange’s general index closed 2.99 per cent lower. The fall exceeded the previous largest daily decline this year, recorded in March when the index dropped 2.7 per cent following the US and Israeli attack on Iran.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has placed the idea of BRICS nations acting as “pioneers” at the centre of his message to the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, setting out a programme based on innovation, peace, exchanges between civilisations and reform of global governance.

Addressing the first session of the summit on 12 September, Xi said the BRICS cooperation mechanism had developed over two decades into what he described as the world’s most influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries.

Norway’s Princess Astrid has died aged 94, two days after attending the funeral of her younger brother King Harald V, the Norwegian Royal House said on Friday. Her death came exactly two weeks after Harald died at Rikshospitalet in Oslo on 28 August.

Princess Astrid, King Harald’s elder sister and a member of the Norwegian royal family for more than nine decades, died on 11 September.

Drivers in parts of Finland face a risk of slippery roads on Tuesday morning as overnight temperatures fall towards freezing, before a change in the weather brings widespread rain from Wednesday, according to Foreca.

Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall overnight, with frost possible in parts of the country. The risk will be highest across central and northern Finland, where road surfaces could drop below freezing.

A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train about two kilometres from Poland on Sunday during a mass attack on Ukraine that killed at least six people and injured dozens. Ukrainian authorities said passengers had been evacuated before the strike and no one aboard was hurt.

Ukraine’s state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia said its monitoring team detected the threat and issued an evacuation order about 15 minutes before the drone hit near Yahodyn in the Volyn region.

Yemen’s Houthi movement has reached Perim Island at the mouth of the Red Sea after seizing the port of Mocha, extending an offensive that has brought its forces to one of the main shipping routes between Asia and Europe.

Four Yemeni government sources told Reuters on Friday that Houthi forces had reached Perim, also known as Mayyun, which lies inside the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

European leaders meeting in Rovaniemi have backed a stronger EU role in the Arctic, with Finland pressing for joint icebreaker capacity, more investment in northern infrastructure and a coordinated response to Russian pressure in the region.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo received support for the icebreaker proposal from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said Europe needed more such vessels and that Finland had Germany’s backing to advance the idea jointly.

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has called on leading artificial intelligence companies to slow the pace of model development, arguing that safety work is falling behind advances in AI capability.

Amodei set out a three-part proposal on Saturday that includes permanent independent evaluators inside major AI companies, shared safety standards across the industry and international cooperation on AI risks.

Finnish regulators have suspended healthcare services at two Plastic Surgery Center companies operating from the same premises in central Helsinki after inspectors found serious risks to patient safety.

The Licensing and Supervisory Agency, LVV, carried out an unannounced inspection at the Aleksanterinkatu premises of Plastic Surgery Center Helsinki Oy and Plastic Surgery Center Tampere Oy on 9 September. The agency ordered both providers to stop healthcare services with immediate effect.
