Angry Birds expands to sweets and playgrounds

Rovio Asia’s senior vice president, Henri Holm, during the official Facebook launch of Angry Birds at a mall in Jakarta, Indonesia on 14 February. Angry Birds, the most downloaded mobile app of 2011, was catapulted into the world of Facebook in a bid to get one billion people playing the addictive game.

Rovio has found that Angry Birds is not just a game; it is also a lucrative brand that sells in all types of formats.

ROVIO’S Angry Birds is expanding its empire. The company has announced a licensing deal with the playground manufacturer Lappset, and it is also looking elsewhere. Fazer and Rovio have signed an agreement to develop and sell Angry Birds-themed candy, and the new confectionaries are planned to be in stores in June 2012.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in combining new taste sensations with entertainment,” says Pekka Rantala, Managing Director of the Fazer confectionary business area. “This creates new opportunities, and we have identified the ‘joyful and playful’ field as one of the interesting avenues in our product development.”

Rantala told Helsingin Sanomat that Fazer will create the new flavours, while Rovio will supply the characters. He went on to add that the sweets will include all the same characters as in the games, which will presumably include the birds and the pigs. Two different types of sugar confectionary are planned.
