Hunt for treasure at a flea market PDF Print E-mail
The Hietalahti flea market is open every day during the summer months.

Creating an individual look with unique details has long been a trend when it comes to styling both yourself and your home, and flea markets are a popular place to shop for such items. There are many flea markets in the greater Helsinki area but the most popular of all – especially during the summer months – are the Valtteri and the Hietalahti “Hietsu” flea markets.

Located on the Hietalahdentori square, the Hietalahti flea market is the only one that takes place every day. On a trip to the kirppis, as Finns call them, you can discover many interesting items.

The most common items on sale are clothes and dinnerware, but you can pretty much find anything that is used in everyday life, from shoes, bags, jewellery and books to CDs, LPs, children’s toys, decoration items, furniture, sports equipment and instruments.

As a seller, many stalls vie for the attention of the inclined buyers and therefore some tricks are needed to draw their interest, especially when selling clothes. But Anton, who is selling the garments he cleaned out of his wardrobe at Hietsu for the first time, is not anxious.

“The most important thing is to create a relaxing atmosphere so that the customers feel comfortable. Also, I don’t worry too much – I’m just enjoying the weather with my friends and trying to make a little money at the same time.” Alex, who is also selling his unwanted items, might have a slight advantage with his eye-catching display of apothecary bottles. “Even though I collect apothecary bottles, those didn’t fit in my collection so I decided to sell them along with other things I have no use for.”

Shopper Kati, who visits flea markets several times a month, has some tips how to make the perfect buy. “I usually look at the sellers whether they have a similar style and size.” Also the approach towards flea-market shopping is important.

“I never visit a flea market with a clear goal in mind, I just look around to see what is out there and never pay more than a few euros.”
