The Finnish government said Thursday it had named Olli Rehn Finland's candidate for the new European commission.
Mr Rehn served as enlargement commissioner in the 2004-9 commission.
The Finnish government has mentioned on a number of occasions it wants to see Mr Rehn in charge of a high-profile portfolio involving the economy or external affairs.
José Barroso, the head of the commission, is expected to unveil the make-up of the new commission at an EU summit at the end of the month.
