A number of severe thunderstorms have cut trees and powerlines around Finland in August.

Around 24,000 households were still without electricity in Finland on Monday morning after Sunday's severe thunderstorms, utilities Vattenfall and Fortum told the Finnish News Agency (STT).

Electricity to as many as 70,000 households was cut by the storms during the night, but some of the damage had already been repaired by morning. According to Vattenfall, Sunday's storm was not as severe as the one in early August, named Asta by meteorologists, but the damage was spread over a wider region.

The storm was particularly fierce in southern Lapland and parts of central and northern Pohjanmaa.

Train tracks have also been cut due to fallen trees. Finnish Railways (VR) said Monday that rail traffic between Lahti and Kouvola is being substituted with a bus service until the tracks have been cleared.
