The parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee has voted 9—8 against the bill for equal marriage rights, with members of the Finns Party, Centre and National Coalition – with the exception of Jaana Pelkonen – in opposition. Anne Holmlund (NCP), the chair of the committee, views that such drastic reforms should be devised on the basis of proposals by the government. Elsewhere, Jani Toivola (Greens) expressed his disappointment with the decision, which, he believes, will impede on the equality of citizens. A citizens’ initiative to thrust the issue back to the parliament for consideration is scheduled to launch next month.
