Jyrki Katainen, the European Commissioner for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, says the EU has no interest in wrangling over trade on Twitter.

Jyrki Katainen, the European Commissioner for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, says the European Union will have no choice but to respond to the possible introduction of new import tariffs by the United States.

US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose a 20 per cent import tariff on cars assembled in the EU.

“If these tariffs and barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20 per cent tariff on all of their cars coming into the US. Build them here!” tweeted Trump.

“If they decide to raise their import tariffs, we’ll have no choice, again, but to react,” Katainen stated to Le Monde. “We don’t want to fight [over trade] in public via Twitter. We should end the escalation.”

His comments were picked up also by Reuters and CNBC.
