Simon Elo, the chairperson of the Blue Parliamentary Group, took part in a panel discussion about a new book about the split of the Finns Party by Lauri Nurmi at the Helsinki Book Fair on Thursday, 26 October, 2017.

Simon Elo, the chairperson of the Blue Parliamentary Group, believes the likelihood of Minister for Foreign Affairs Timo Soini (BR) continuing in politics has increased following the split of the Finns Party Parliamentary Group in June.

“This summer’s events have injected new drive and energy to the old samurai. We’re more likely to see him in the political circles after these events,” Elo stated at the Helsinki Book Fair on Thursday.

“He’ll be part of it, one way or the other,” he asserted.

Soini, he estimated, is eager to contribute to the creation of the Blue Reform. The ex-Finns Party members who founded the soon-to-be political party, however, face an uphill battle for votes, with the latest opinion polls indicating that the splinter group would only receive one to two per cent of the ballot if the parliamentary elections were held today.

Elo also said he expects Soini to be a candidate in “some elections”.

“He’s a political animal and understands these things, and so the best way for a political animal to make a mark in this jungle of ours is to run in elections,” he explained.

Soini himself has only commented on his future in politics briefly.

“I may run in the next elections. Or it may be that I won’t,” he is quoted as saying in a newly published book about the split of the Finns Party, Perussuomalaisten hajoamisen historia, by journalist Lauri Nurmi.
