Antti Rinne, the chairperson of the Social Democrats, believes the government is using the term “freedom of choice” as a veil to conceal the consequences of the social, health care and regional government reform.

The Social Democratic Party has expressed its grave concern about the social, health care and regional government reform.

Antti Rinne, the chairperson of the opposition party, warns that increasing freedom of choice for social and health care customers will inevitably lead to a rise in customer fees and, as a result, to a system that is more expensive for taxpayers.

“Freedom of choice is a beautiful phrase, but the government is using it to veil a truly horrible future,” he wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

Rinne said he is concerned that the availability of social and health care services will decrease due to the production of services becoming increasingly fragmented as “even child and maternity clinics” will be made available to private service providers. The government, he added, should use tax revenues efficiently to produce high-quality and widely available services.

“People must be able to see a doctor, and the elderly have the right to good and high-quality care. The National Coalition’s harsh chicanery is about to destroy services that are important to people,” he said.

Sirpa Paatero (SDP), an ex-Minister for International Development and the current board chairperson of the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, estimated that the process of reforming social and health care services has taken a back seat to the political objectives of the Centre and National Coalition. The Centre has advocated for implementing the regional government reform and the National Coalition for improving the operational preconditions of private social and health care service providers by increasing customers’ freedom of choice over their service provider.

“Based on recent discussions, these will be carried out by almost any means necessary,” Paatero wrote in a blog on Puheenvuoro on Monday.

“It would not have been necessary for the social and health care service reform to create a massive system of counties while making employment services market-based and eroding the influence of municipalities over industrial policy,” she said.
