Local residents mourn child murder victim in Arabianranta, 25.12.18

THE FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE in the Helsinki neighbourhood of Arabianranta was visibly subdued on Tuesday, as residents mourned the death of a local child who is believed to have been murdered.

While little information has been released to the public, it is known that the victim was murdered near their home on the night of Christmas Eve (December 24). The police apprehended a suspect at the scene of the crime, who has been confirmed as a 36-year old male. Whether the suspect was known to the victim has yet to be determined.

While police investigations have intensified over the past 24 hours, local residents gathered on Christmas Day at 6pm on Bokvillan hill to hold a candlelit vigil and observe a moment of silence for the deceased.

A local pastor, Kari Kanala, led the ceremony and provided words of comfort to mourners. He also announced that grief counselling will be made available to anyone in need, with sessions being held at the Paavalinkirkko in the Vallila neighbourhood.

The lead investigator responded to a request for comment from Yle, stating “we cannot divulge anything more without endangering the case”, promising that further announcements and updates would be provided later in the week.
