The Finnish Industrial Union, Service Union United (PAM) and Trade Union Pro have announced they will launch one-day strikes in protest of a government proposal to make laying off easier for businesses with no more than 20 staff on Wednesday, 3 October.

The Industrial Union on Friday said a total of 22,000 employees at 150 workplaces will participate in the strike between 12am on Wednesday and 12am on Thursday.

“We were hoping that we would not have to go this far, but the hard-headedness of the right-wing government of [Prime Minister] Juha Sipilä (Centre) left us no choice,” commented Riku Aalto, the chairperson of the Industrial Union.

Aalto also said the amendments floated by the prime minister “would not even come close” to compelling the union to call off the industrial action.

PAM on Friday revealed that approximately 1,000 employees at almost 100 workplaces will participate in the strike, while Pro stated that its strike will only affect certain companies and workplaces.

“Sipilä’s government has driven us into a situation where we have no choice but to resort to political industrial action,” stated Ann Selin, the chairperson of PAM. “This is our attempt to defend protection against unilateral termination and employee rights. The government’s policies jeopardise the equal treatment and employment security of employees. We cannot accept it.”

Also the food and electricity sectors will be affected by strikes as of Wednesday, 3 October.
