Recruitment difficulties among businesses are common in a wide range of industries and regions in Finland, finds a survey conducted by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK).

EK on Friday reported that over a quarter (26%) of businesses have faced considerable and over four-tenths (41%) moderate difficulties in finding skilled workers. The skills shortage is affecting especially well-established small and medium enterprises, which form the industrial backbone of various regions in Finland.

The phenomenon is evident also outside urban regions, according to EK. Its survey found that as many as 42 per cent of businesses domiciled in rural regions around cities have faced serious recruitment difficulties.

Almost a third (30%) of respondents attributed the phenomenon to the lack of occupational skills of applicants.

A quarter of respondents also indicated that the educational background of applicants does not meet their needs or that the necessary education is not even available. Over one in six (16%) identified inactivity traps and the difficulties associated with hiring from abroad as reasons for their recruitment difficulties.

“I see the skills shortage exacerbating day by day. The effects are felt by the entire national economy,” comments Kirsi Naamanka, the managing director of Kilta Henkilöstöpalvelut.

“For example, companies in the manufacturing industries do not necessarily want to bid for a tender or look for new orders if they have no confidence in their ability to deliver the orders. This would require some guarantees that there is a sufficient number of workers and experts,” she explains.
