The Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) has announced its plans to organise a political demonstration in protest of the adoption of the much-criticised activation model for unemployment security on Friday, 2 February.

“The government must backtrack on the activation model,” it demanded on Monday.

Jarkko Eloranta, the chairperson of SAK, rejected the assurances given by the government that the activation model would improve unemployment security.

“The prime minister’s claim that the activation model will improve unemployment security is inaccurate. The activation model will shorten the waiting period by two days, but all it does is effectively reverse an earlier decision. The government is acting in a way that is reactionary and unpremeditated,” he slammed in a press release.

“The activation model has a number of problems. For example, how do you make sure the unemployed receive a certificate for short-term employment without delay to ensure the allowances are paid on time?” said Eloranta.

SAK also announced it will call a joint meeting of the decision-making bodies of its member organisations next week to discuss means to support a citizens’ initiative launched to counter the activation model. The initiative has received statements of support from almost 130,000 members of the public.

A minimum of 50,000 statements of support is required to present a citizens’ initiative to the Parliament.

SAK revealed that it is also planning on unveiling its own proposal for measures to activate job seekers on 23 January.

CORRECTION: SAK has announced its plan to stage a political demonstration in protest of the activation model on 2 February, 2018, not a strike as an unedited version of this article erroneously claimed.
