The Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) has filed an appeal against a decision to dissolve the Finnish chapter of the neo-Nazi organisation, according to media reports.

The District Court of Pirkanmaa in November accepted a legal action to dissolve the organisation and its affiliates on grounds that their operations are not only in violation of moral principles but outright illegal. The operations were also ruled to fall outside the scope of freedom of speech and assembly because they violate the basic and human rights of others.

NRM and its affiliates argue in their appeal that the appeal should be granted due to, for example, a lack of judicial practice on dissolving unregistered organisations, according to Helsingin Sanomat.

The legal action was filed at the beginning of last year by the National Police Board, which cited a deadly assault that took part during a protest staged by the far-right organisation as evidence of the organised and violent nature of its operations. The assault was committed by the chairperson of one of the affiliates, Pohjoinen Perinne.

The chairperson, Jesse Torniainen, was sentenced to two years in prison after he was found guilty of aggravated assault but not guilty of negligent homicide.

Pohjoinen Perinne additionally argued in the appeal that the dissolution decision falls outside the purview of the District Court of Pirkanmaa, reminding that the affiliate is domiciled in Oulu and has a postal address in Vantaa.
