The Snow Queen returns
The Snow Queen, a magical winter ballet choreographed by Ballet Director Kenneth Greve, is here again! The ballet, based on the fairy tale classic by Hans Christian Andersen, was seen by more than 26,000 visitors last year and became a hit ballet of the season. For this season, 21 performances have been scheduled between November and January at the Finnish National Ballet.
The principal characters in the ballet are Kerttu and Kai, who are good friends. Kerttu finds the missing piece of the Snow Queen’s mirror, and the Snow Queen kidnaps Kai to get it back. Kerttu wanders far in search of Kai and finally ends up at the frozen castle of the Snow Queen.
The magical winter wonderland of the ballet is created by costume designer Erika Turunen, make-up artist Pekka Helynen and lightning designer Mikki Kunttu. The accompanying music composed by Tuomas Kantelinen is a recording performed by the Finnish National Opera orchestra. A recording of the score for The Snow Queen was published on the Ondine label earlier this year.
