Nokia announced it has signed an agreement to support NTT Docomo as the Japanese telecommunications giant develops its mobile network from 4G to 5G.

Nokia has announced it has signed an agreement to supply baseband products for the planned launch of fifth-generation (5G) mobile services by NTT Docomo, the largest telecommunications operator in Japan, by 2020.

NTT Docomo has prepared for the launch of 5G mobile services since 2014, according to a press release from Nokia.

“We are now proceeding to the next step to launch 5G mobile services by 2020, and accelerate co-creation of new services and businesses with vertical industry partners,” says Hiroshi Nakamura, the chief technology officer at NTT Docomo.

Helsingin Sanomat highlights that network equipment developers have long been affected negatively by the fact that many telecommunications operators have made major investments in fourth-generation (4G) mobile technology and, as a result, postponed their investments in 5G technology.

Nokia expects the commercial breakthrough of 5G technology to finally take place in 2019.

Marc Rouanne, the head of mobile networks at Nokia, says the agreement represents a big milestone in making 5G networks a commercial reality, “especially in a country with a long and proud history of technological achievements and early technology adoption”.

“Together we have worked very hard in recent months to commence preparations for NTT Docomo’s eventual launch of its operational 5G service by 2020,” he says.
